The Parish Council has made the difficult decision to close the footbridge connecting Cuckney Primary School with the play park in Cuckney due to significant concerns over insurance coverage and public liability. The closure, effective immediately, follows a review of the liability the Council would possibly be open to – should an accident occur.
For many years, the footbridge has served as a link between the school and the play park, providing children, parents, and teachers with a convenient and safe passage. Despite its importance to the community, the bridge’s history remains somewhat of a mystery. Records detailing its construction are either incomplete or non-existent, making it difficult to assess the exact age or original specifications of the structure.
This lack of historical information has compounded concerns about the bridge’s current state. With no maintenance having taken place over the years, the bridge has deteriorated significantly, raising red flags about its structural integrity. The Parish Council’s recent investigation revealed numerous issues further complicated by the unknown origins and methods used in its construction.
The Parish Council’s decision to close the bridge was largely influenced by the potential for insurance claims to be rejected due to the structure’s condition and with conversations with the land owner, Welbeck Estate’s Ltd.
With the footbridge now closed, stakeholders are faced with the challenging task of determining its future. Initial discussions have begun regarding potential options, including repairing the current structure or replacing it entirely. However, both options would require significant financial investment, and the unknown origin, ownership and construction of the bridge present additional complications.
Alternative options are being actively explored by parties involved to cover the costs of any necessary work. In the interim, parents and children are encouraged to use alternative routes to the play park and the school. Signage has been placed at the end of the bridge, informing residents of the closure.
The closure of the footbridge is a significant change for Cuckney, but the Parish Council remains committed to ensuring that any future developments prioritise the safety and well-being of all residents.
